Canada’s first licensed woman pilot was celebrated yesterday on the 100th anniversary of her birth in Wiarton.
The Wiarton Airport named its two-story passenger terminal building after Eileen Vollick.
The tribute had members of the Vollick family in attendance, including her two daughters and younger sister.
An Ontario Heritage marker was also unveiled in the new Eileen Vollick Park, located in the entrance of the Airport.
Dwight Burley, the chair of the airport service board for the airport says they honoured Vollick because they wanted to pay a tribute to all women pilots.
Burley says this is the first airport terminal to be named in a woman’s name.
He says Vollick is a great role model because she shows there is nothing stopping a woman or a man from reaching their goals.
Vollicks daughter, Joyce Miles says the naming of the terminal building is a great honour.
Miles says her experience in South Bruce Peninsula has been terrific.
Vollick recieved her license in 1928 at the age of 19 and she passed away in 1968.
