I’ts been two months since a devastating earthquake hit a mountain area of China killing almost 70 thousand and injuring almost 400 thousand people.
Despite massive relief efforts, more than 5 million people still don’t have adequate shelter, but an Owen Sound man is trying to help.
Terry Skinner has begun fund raising efforts to raise money to purchase large tents to provide temporary emergency shelter for some of the homeless.
These tents are large enough to house entire families so they wont be separated as a result of the disaster.
He says he initially wants to raise enough to purchase more than 700 tents which then will be shipped free of charge to China.
Skinner says a Cambridge company, Newteck will ship a large container to Schuan where company officials will arrange for distribution of the tents to people in the earthquake zone.
He says the local Owen Sound Canadian Tire store has come on board and will supply the tents at cost for this project.
Skinner says all that is needed now is for people in the community to come forward with denotations to make this effort a reality.
He says the Reverend Randy Kennedy has set up a special account at TD Canada Trust for the Tents for China Campaign.
Skinner says while people now will be focusing on the Olympics in China, they should not forget the millions of people who are still in need because of the earthquake.
