The next time you visit the Vaughan Mills Mall, you might feel like you’re in Tobermory.
A delegation of people from Bruce County are travelling to York Region today to deliver an 18 foot replica of the Big Tub Lighthouse in Tobermory.
It will be pieced together in the “Lakes District” of the mall and officially unveiled next Thursday.
Mall staff approached Bruce County Tourism about building the display and Co-ordinator Chris Hughes says they jumped at the opportunity.
Hughes says they partnered with the Southampton Marine Heritage Society to build the replica.
He says a team of 8 volunteers spent more than 500 hours building the lighthouse replica at the ” Boat House ” in Southampton.
Hughes says they received the original lighthouse drawings from Parks Canada and they were reworked by Grant Diemert Architects in Owen Sound.
It cost about 10 thousand dollars to build.
The contract will see the Big Tub Lighthouse in Canada’s Largest Outlet Mall for at least 10 years.
Hughes notes the lighthouse is fully functional with a working light, interpretive panels and an LCD television to tell story about Bruce County lighthouses.
He adds it is a great tool for Bruce because the mall attracts 10.3 million shoppers each year and they are trying to attract people from the GTA.
