Despite the recent implementation of development charges, the Town issued 208 building permits this past June compared to 185 permits in June of 2007.
The total value of the permits as of June 30th was at 49 million dollars, at the same time last year the value was 25 million.
There has been an increase in permits for multi-unit dwellings as 18 permits were issued for 90 units with a total value of 15 million dollars.
Last year there were only 3 permits issued for 12 units at 1.5 million.
There were 78 permits for single-family dwellings were issued worth about 23 million dollars compared to 73 permits at 18 million.
Looking down the road, Chief Building Official Jim Bell forsees an increase in the commercial side with the addition of the new Wal-Mart Super Centre at the south end of Port Elgin.
He says the effects of the development charges won’t be seen for at least another year.
