Saugeen Shores is in the head of the class when it comes to recycling.
Councillor Fred Schildroth performed a demonstration during last night’s Council meeting to show what items can and can not be recycled.
Schildroth says it is great to see how much the Town has achieved in reducing waste.
He says the Town diverted over 11 hundred tons of waste in 2007 that would have ended up in the landfill.
Schildroth says the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling program started out with two trucks and now has a fleet of 16 vehicles servicing 30 thousand households.
He says the demand and business is growing to a point where they are considering expanding their sorting plant.
There has been talk about implementing a Green Bin program to go along with the Blue Box.
The Green Bin takes organic waste such as food and paper towels to be converted to compost.
Schildroth hopes someone will step up and bring the program to Saugeen Shores.
He says there will be new capital costs like the purchase of new trucks if they were to implement such a program.
But he says it is an investment that is worth pursuing.
He says if it takes off it maybe expanded to the entire area served by BASWR.
