As Southampton’s weekend of 150th anniversary celebrations approaches, another date is being recognized.
Tonight a parade, a play and music and dance will highlight the anniversary of the incorporation of Southampton.
It happened on July 24th, 1858.
On Soundingboard Monday, 150th anniversary spokesperson Duncan McCallum says tonight everyone is welcome to “meet at the flag” at the foot of High Street where the Town Crier and a piper will march to the town hall.
There a play called “Captain and the Council” written by local playwright Deanna Underwood.
Starring, among others, current Saugeen Shores mayor Mike Smith, the story will re-enact the first council meeting of the day.
McCallum says following the play, everyone will go to the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre for a reception, highlight by music and dance performed by Saugeen First Nation.
There is no admission charge but there will be a cash bar at the museum.
Southampton will have a several days of 150th anniversary celebrations from August 14 to 17.
