The derby, which is conducted annually by the Lake Huron Fishing Club, runs through Saturday August 9th.
Anglers will be fishing for the top salmon and trout which will yield big cash prizes this year.
Beach Derby reporter Gary Byers anticipates the winning weight for the heaviest fish this year could range from 18 pounds up to 24 pounds.
The territory for the event stretches from the Point Clark Lighthouse in the south to the Lisle Island Lighthouse in the north, a span of 2,200 square miles.
Byers states there’s no guarantee in any given year exactly where the heaviest fish will be found.
In previous years, the winning fish has been caught in various locations along the derby territory.
Byers relates this is a very special year for the the derby and the Lake Huron Fishing Club.
A 25 year run exemplifies how committed the club is to the derby and to the process of maintaining a sport fishery for generations ahead.
Monday on Soundingboard at 10:05, John Divinski will interview the co-chairs of the event, Len O’Connor and Ron Plaskett.
