The much needed addition to the Intertownship Fire Department Fire Hall in Owen Sound is now open.
An official opening ceremony was held at the hall yesterday.
The Fire Department is jointly owned by the Township of Georgian Bluffs and the Municipality of Meaford.
Many dignitaries were in attendance including: Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch, Meaford Mayor Francis Richardson and members of council, Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot and members of council.
Fire Chief Carl Linthorne says the three bay addition is a long time coming and brings the total number of bays at the hall to five now.
Linthorne says they use to have to place some of their fire trucks outside but they are now able to keep their vehicles housed in a heated environment.
Linthorne says keeping the trucks in the bays will make it easier and quicker for firefighters to respond to an emergency, especially in the winter.
Linthorne says the extra bays also allow firefighters to do training inside the hall which he says it’s nice especially during the miserable weather.
The total cost of the addition is 220 thousand dollars with no money coming from the provincial and federal government to help pay for it.
75 per cent of the money will come from Georgian Bluffs and 25 per cent coming from Meaford.
