Stats Canada says the 7% drop in the crime rate is due to a fall in property offences and fewer violent crimes.
Bayshore Broadcasting news has investigated the figures on a local level and for the most part they reflect the national trend.
The number of Criminal code offences in Owen Sound last year was 1,603 which is down from a few years ago. There were 189 assaults and 13 sexual assaults reported.
One of the quietest areas for crime is in Grey county (Chatsworth). 20 assaults were reported and 7 sexual assaults but the likelihood of being assaulted was only 1-300.
For most of Grey, Bruce and Huron counties, Stats Canada reported Property crimes and theft made up the vast majority of criminal offences in 2007.
