Now that the mould is gone from the Port Elgin Plex, the Town wants to make sure it doesn’t come back.
Saugeen Shores Council has given staff the go-ahead to have a temporary dehumidification unit put in for the summer and a permanent one installed in October.
Director of Community Services Mike Myatt says the temporary unit allows for the Plex to remain open during the months of July, August, and September for ice bookings.
Myatt says the free-dry desiccant permanent unit is much better than a gas-operated one because it takes more moisture out of the air and works more efficiently.
Durer Brothers are going to put in the temporary unit at a cost of $12,421.
Emke Schabb Climate Care will install the permanent one for $139,200 plus $10,000 for hydro installation.
It is the third highest of the four tenders but it will remove more moisture in less time and in Myatt’s report to Council, that was a factor in the bidding.
Myatt says staff will meet with CAO Ron Brown and Treasurer Lori Sweiger to discuss how the Town will pay for the units as well as the remediation of the mould.
He says staff will present a report to Council at a future meeting.
Mould was first discovered in the arena back in January but it didn’t pose a threat because it wasn’t airborne.
The remediation was completed back in June.
