Construction is now underway on the long-awaited …. “Slope Stabilization and River re-alignment” project near the Neustadt Lagoons.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles says the total cost of the project will likely hit 2 million dollars and it will take about 14 weeks to complete the work.
Wayne Swartz construction began the work this week which involves moving the South Saugeen riverbed about 100-150 metres away from the bank.
Crews will stablize the new 250 metre long riverbed and then the bank itself to stop the Slope from deteriorating.
Mayor Eccles says over the last six years the river slope has moved back about 10 metres and is now only about 75 metres from the Lagoon.
Eccles says the concern is the Neustadt Lagoon berm could break … and raw sewage would then get into the river.
Queens Park and the Federal government are both kicking in cash to help pay for the project.
West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles says it is a very unique project … and it has been several years since a project of this scope has been undertaken in Ontario.
