A Canada – U.S conference is being held over the next two days in Toronto, looking at the impact of global warming on the Great Lakes.
It is a meeting of the “Great Lakes St. Lawrence Cities Initiative”, and Town of the Blue Mountains Mayor Ellen Anderson is one of the Directors.
The meeting will look at water levels on the Lakes and some possible causes.
Mayor Anderson says although lake levels have recovered somewhat this spring, it is likely a temporary recovery.
She says global warming is believed to be one of the major causes of lower lake levels because the warmer winters mean less ice-cover on the Great Lakes.
That leads to more evaporation than in the past.
Two other contributors are simply the number of people drawing water from the Great Lakes system compared to 30 years ago, and concern about dredging at the mouth of the St. Clair river.
