Grey Bruce and Simcoe County farmers want Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to reaffirm support for the Ontario Bio fuels sector.
Ontario Federation of Agriculture officials concerned about comments the premier has made linking the increased cost of food to the biofuel industry.
They fear that such negative comments could hinder the expansion of the biofuel sector which in turn would have a direct impact on the market for Ontario’s corn producers.
OFA Official Don McCabe says the Premiers support for this sector will encourage new investment and more jobs for Ontario.
He also says by increasing this market means that farmers in Ontario will be getting a much better return on their investment.
He also says people should not be blaming ethanol production to increased food costs.
McCabe says the real reason the cost of food going up is not because corn producers are getting more for their crops, but because the high cost of oil and speculators.
He says just a few years ago the price he was getting for corn was lower than the price Toronto was paying to ship garbage to Michigan.
McCabe says he hopes that his corn is worth a lot more than Toronto’s Garbage.
He says that biofuels are good for the environment, good for farmers and use less energy to make than other fuels.
