An Ontario Nature researcher is looking in Grey Bruce for a snake in the grass, or rocks or swamp.
Joe Crowley is heading up a project to document the population of reptiles at risk in the two counties and will be looking for them in several nature reserves.
He says he will be checking out the health of the reptile population around the Kinghurst forest, Lyal Island, Bruce Alvar and Baptist Harbour nature reserves.
Crowley says because reptiles like snakes and turtles are difficult to find, their populations are very poorly documented in many regions including Grey Bruce so it is very difficult to determine just how healthy the population really is.
He says the information he collected for Ontario Nature will be used to manage the nature reserves for these species at risk and will help educate the general population to encourage people to take part in reptile conservation.
Crowley says he will be doing his survey during the summer and fall and hopes to compile an accurate picture of the reptile population of Grey Bruce by early winter.
