Construction has started on a new affordable housing project in Owen Sound.
The facility is called ” Bluewater Ridge ” and it will provide 37 rental units.
A sod turning ceremony was held this morning for the new facility under the Canada Ontario Affordable Housing program.
The facility — which is called “Bluewater Ridge” — is located at 6th Avenue East.
The $3.9 million project will provide 37 rental units for low income families and individuals.
The federal and provincial governments contributed $2.3 million while the project was complimented with $527,000 in municipal incentives.
A number of politicians were on hands including Conservative MP Larry Miller, Liberal MPP Carol Mitchell, Grey County Warden Kevin Eccles and Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell.
Both Miller and Mitchell say the project will help families in need of safe, affordable and quality housing.
Miller also announced the federal government was contributing another $824,000 to the project.
Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell is glad all levels of government worked together on the project.
But she says they need more housing units to meet increasing demands.
Ken Thomson is the Chair of the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation.
He says the project is a must as the waiting list of people waiting for affordable housing continues to grow.
Thomson says the waiting list is well over 700 people in Grey County and says this housing unit will take a small dint out of that number.
Thomson says they are hoping to have the housing complex completed by March of next year.
