The radio industry and the Bayshore Broadcasting family has lost a member.
Ed Eldred died of an apparent heart attack in his Niagara area home yesterday.
Eldred — who grew up in Owen Sound — spent 30 years in the radio industry — more than 20 of which was at 560 CFOS.
He was Sports Director before leaving to work in radio in St. Catherine’s.
Dave Carr worked alongside Eldred for 16 years and remembers Eldred built up the local sports content.
Carr — who worked 30 years himself at 560 CFOS — says Eldred covered every sport that was taking place.
Eldred was also Owen Sound Minor Hockey President in 1980’s.
Carr says Eldred was also a versatile announcer and that allowed him to hold a very high profile in the community.
Carr remembers an incident in the early 1970’s when Keenan Brothers had a huge fire — and both Carr and Eldred not only covered the fire, but also helped fire fighters extinguished the blaze.
Carr says Eldred’s greatest strength was he knew everybody in Owen Sound.
Eldred came directly to 560 CFOS after graduating from OSCVI and started on air doing Sports.
