It’s a rural tradition, neighbours helping neighbours during hard times.
Now that tradition is expanding to include people living in the cities who depend on food banks to help put food on the table.
The Farmers Feed Cities campaign is calling on Ontarios grain and oilseed producers to help feed struggling Ontarians this harvest season.
While prices for food staples are going up this year due, in part, to increasing commodity prices, the people who rely on food banks are being hit the hardest.
Farmers Feed Cities Campaign organizer Scott Allen says they have joined with the United Way to collect bushel donations from farmers this harvest season at elevators across the province.
Starting with wheat harvest this month, donation cards will be available at many of the country elevators and that money will be given to the United way to help area food banks.
Allen says as the harvest continues, they will be asking soybean and corn producers to also donate some of their crop to help the food banks.
He says they are asking producers to consider donating just a few bushels of their crop this year to feed cities when they are most in need.
