A Kincardine health care group is bringing in a new piece of equipment for the hospital that will better detect breast cancer.
Members of the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation came to Wednesday’s Council meeting asking them to help pay for half of the cost of a new digital mammography machine.
The new equipment will also allow for doctors at other hospitals to view the results through the PACS system.
Fundraising Chair Gregg McClelland says they have already purchased the $300,000 machine with the approval from the South Bruce Grey Health Centre.
He says the Foundation will pay for the other half of the cost through their annual Radiothon and other fundraising initiatives.
McClelland says the new mammography machine is necessary for the 2,200 patients who come to the Kincardine hospital for breast exams.
He says without the new machine, patients would have to go to Walkerton to get examinations.
He says doctors fear that women would pass up getting an exam if they have to travel elsewhere especially during the winter where road closures are likely.
Council will look into their health care reserves to see if they can meet the group’s request.
McClelland believes the Municipality will come to the table and partner with them.
He expects the new machine will arrive at the hospital sometime in August.
