As we celebrate our nation’s 141st birthday, comes a reminder of what we have to be proud of.
Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle says Canadians tend to be self-effacing about the things our country has accomplished in both peace and war but sees signs that may be about to change.
Steckle says when he talks to young children in schools he always reminds them of what our flag represents and why it’s important to handle it with respect.
He says the message is getting through and that the young tend to take such things more seriously than adults.
Steckle cautions us not to take our share of the good life for granted.
Steckle says Huron and Bruce Counties are typical of many areas of Canada that were built from the wilderness into the modern society we have today.
Steckle says complacency on the part of adult Canadians may lead us to lose many of the things in our lives that we appreciate now.
One thing that concerns Steckle is our environmental record.
Steckle says the best way to maintain Canada as the best country in the world is to “clean up our act” on the environment so that we have a nation fit to leave to our children and grandchildren.
Steckle will appear at Canada Day activities in downtown Goderich this afternoon.
