Hockey players might get a few extra weeks in the next season.
The township of Georgian Bluffs is looking at putting ice into the Shallow Lake arena a couple of weeks early.
Councillor Ryan Thompson says a lot of minor hockey teams have to travel as far away as Southampton the first few weeks of September to get ice time.
He says now that they’ve done some upgrades to the facilities, they’re looking at getting the ice surface in during the first couple weeks of September.
Thompson says they re-invested in the rink, and bought a new compressor, so he hopes that will help them get the ice surface in earlier.
He says it will be a trial; he says if the temperatures are still too warm, then obviously the ice will melt and they won’t be able to do it this year.
Thompson adds it will be beneficial for surrounding communities like Lion’s Head, Hepworth, and Wiarton.
He says they’ll be able to rent ice time to hockey teams from those areas as well, and hopes that will bring some revenue into the town.
The estimated cost of getting ice in early is about two thousand dollars.
