The Social Services Committee of Bruce County is making changes to their waiting list policy.
Council at their Social Services Committee meeting yesterday adopted a new waiting list policy that would see more families be eligible for childcare subsidy based on their income.
Social Services Director Terry Sanderson says the waiting list for childcare subsidy is expanding every week.
He feels they need an extra 500 thousand dollars a year to currently fund childcare services in the County.
He says the current policy of income testing allows for higher income earners to qualify for childcare subsidy.
Sanderson says the County throws in 20 percent of their money into a lot of their child care budgets.
But he says the Province is the major contributor and believes that it is a federal or provincial domain and they should be funding an expanding childcare need.
He says any increase in funding would likely maintain the status quo.
Sanderson says there is an increasing number of families making less than 20 thousand dollars a year.
He says these people often make a difficult decision to either keep their job or go on welfare because they can’t get subsidized childcare.
He says it is a real unfortunate situation for them to be in.
