The town received its 2007 Municipal Performance Measures Program Report from the Ontario government at Monday’s council meeting.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says they’re pleased to see that overall, Hanover is doing very well in terms of efficiency and effectiveness.
The report focuses on everything from roads to water services and sewage.
However, one fact that is disturbing to council is that while the total rate of crime has gone down, the rate of youth crime is up significantly.
Maskell says it didn’t really come as a surprise, but it’s definitely something council needs to focus on.
She says the mayor of Stratford has been in contact with the town of Hanover, to share ideas and talk about the strategy they have in place.
Maskell says Stratford has been dealing with a similar situation and the two towns are going to work together.
She says there is an initiative by the Grey-Bruce Health Unit called “Youth Roots.”
The group was originally formed to tackle the crystal meth problem in the town, and Maskell says they’re gearing up now to focus on youth crime, and getting youth more engaged.
She says she, along with other mayors in Grey County, have been invited to attend the group’s next meeting on June 26th at the Owen Sound North Grey Union Public Library.
