Owen Sound is looking at designating St. Mary’s High School as a heritage building.
The city’s planning and heritage advisory committee is recommending to council to designate the 1891 section of the school under the Ontario Heritage Act.
Councillor Deb Haswell says council will decide soon whether or not to accept the recommendation to designate.
She says the public will have 30 days to object to the designation – if none are received, council can then pass a bylaw designating the property.
Haswell says she is intrigued why there has not been a lot of comments from the public on the issue.
The Ministry of Education has deemed the 117-year old wing of the school cost prohibitive to repair.
The Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board is planning to tear down the oldest section of the school and construct 10 additional classrooms.
