A Hanover business owner is looking for compensation from council.
Kim Krofchak-Smillie is the owner of The Professional’s Hotel Suites on 11th Avenue.
She says road work being done caused her to lose some business, and she feels council could have been more clear and prompt with their notice about the work.
Krofchak-Smillie says she refunded her customers that were staying in May, right when the work began.
She’s looking for half of the money, which is $750.
Krofchak-Smillie says she wasn’t informed of the level of noise that would take place, the water coming from the taps is dirty, and access to her parking lot is blocked.
She says she’s only looking for 50% of the losses, because she’s happy the work is being done.
She adds the work has been a long time coming, and if council had given more warning, she could have communicated better with her customers, and had a chance to reschedule others who may not have minded the noise or other issues.
Council will discuss the issue further to decide whether or not to reimburse the business owner.
Mayor Kathi Maskell says it will be a tough decision, as Krofchak-Smillie has been very understanding of the issue.
But she says council has to be very careful as it’s “difficult to set a precedent like that.”
