A “grandmother’s vision” of babies being cold in the north has fuelled an Owen Sound woman’s quest to collect much-needed baby supplies.
Katherine Archibald heard of the Winnipeg grandmother’s vision, and started to gather diapers, diaper pins, booties, sweaters, hats and all kinds of blankets.
Archibald has now sent 700 pounds of “baby bundles” to First Nations Communities in Northern Canada that can’t be accessed by road.
She says items we take for granted in the south are often unavailable or very expensive in fly-in communities like Big Trout Lake and Fort Severn.
Archibald says she received help from Grey County OPP Senior Constable Steve Starr arranging for the airlift.
Archibald and her husband Bill drove to Thunder Bay to drop off the goods, and they were taken from there to the remote communities by airplane.
She is starting a new batch of bundles and hopes to have them ready for this fall.
Archibald says anyone with baby items from newborn to size 2 can call her at 519-376-9151.
Starr says it’s a big job taking the bundles to Thunder Bay and is hoping that perhaps a locak trucking firm going west this fall could help out.
The bundles would weigh about 5-7 hundred pounds.
