Phase three of the re-construction of the Grey Bruce Line will start later this week.
Cedarwell Excavating have been awarded the tender for $3.5 million to complete the earthwork, grading and culvert replacements.
Chatsworth Mayor and Chair of Grey County’s Transportation and Public Safety Committee, Howard Greig says all four bids were very competitive, adding the cost per kilometre for the road project has been decreasing over the years.
He says with the $3.5 million tender — it works out to about $420,000 per kilometre.
Greig says this next construction phase will be about 8 kilometres.
He says construction will continue until October, adding a section of the Grey Bruce Line will be closed to traffic.
Greig says if the work proceeds as anticipated there will only be 2 kilometres left for reconstruction next year, with a complete resurfacing of the road by 2010.
Greig says both counties need to meet again with the MTO to discuss the reconstruction options for the Alvanley intersection on highway 21.
The MTO has previously stated that the intersection is not a top priority for realignment and traffic signals.
