A top child psychiatrist from McMaster University is saying that Canadian families don’t spend enough time together.
Dr. Jean Clinton tells Beach News that new parents need more support from outside sources to properly take care of their children.
She says parents are under so much stress from work and taking on too much responsibility, that they never learn how to properly take care of their kids.
Dr. Clinton says parents shouldn’t feel bad about going to their local health unit or parenting resources for help if they needit.
She says instead of enrolling your kids in so many extracurricular activities, parents can go to an early years centre and take part in parenting groups and enjoy a dialogue with other adults.
Dr. Clinton says as far as she’s seen, there are no differences in quality of parenting in rural areas compared to urban areas.
She says the services are much less available in rural areas, but local health units are doing more to keep parents engaged.
Dr. Clinton travelled throughout Huron County on Wednesday as part of the Health Unit’s Healthy Babies, Healthy Children’s 10th Anniversary.
