Residents in Grey, Bruce and Simcoe Counties are spending a bigger portion of their paycheques on housing.
Stats Canada has released the results of its 2006 census on shelter costs.
The median cost of housing in Owen Sound was over 79 hundred dollars a year — or 661 dollars a month.
That means the average Owen Sound household spent 20.9 per cent of its income on housing and shelter costs — which includes mortgages, taxes and utilities.
That is an increase over the 19.2 per cent registered in the 2001 census.
It is also above the average Canadian household — which spent 18.1 per cent of its annual income on housing in 2006.
About 60 per cent of households in Owen Sound are home owners.
The census also found renters in Owen Sound generally spend more of their income on housing than home owners who still carry a mortgage.
As far as other communities in the region — Collingwood ranked next on the list as households spent 20.7 per cent of its income on housing.
