Grey County is planning for the future of social housing.
The county undertook a recent study of the funding that would be required to meet current and future capital repairs in the social housing sector.
Director of Housing Rod Wyatt says it will cost about $45.7 million over the next 30 years to ensure the counties 888 social housing units are maintained.
He says this is a significant amount of money, but adds it will be spread out over 30 years.
Wyatt says some of the major items that will require attention include floors, roofs, kitchens, bathrooms and windows.
Wyatt says more money will also need to be allocated to the Non-Profit housing reserves.
He says the current annual contribution is about 588 dollars per unit, but it will need to increase by $790 per unit in order to pay for the anticipated repairs over a 30 year period.
The Non-Profit housing includes 12 properties with a total of 467 units.
CAO Gary Wood says there are serious challenges ahead with social housing.
He says though it appears the problems are down the road, they will grow if the county does not plan for them immediately.
Wood says the county needs to go after the senior levels of government for additional support and funding.
