It’s been a problem for all First Nations communities in Canada–clean water.
Saugeen First Nation Chief Randall Kahgee says it’s been a problem in their community as well, but the good news is, that should be a thing of the past any day.
Kahgee says they are closing to commissioning their new water system–a 14 million dollar project with Saugeen Shores.
He says the water should be flowing any day and a special ceremony will be held in the middle of June, in which the entire community will be invited.
Kahgee says the result represents many, many years of work.
Kahgee says clean water tends to be taken for granted in built up areas and yet just a few kilometers down the road, the Saugeen First Nation has been dealing with not having that commodity.
Phase one of the project brings clean water to the main village to the Scott Settlement.
Phase two involved the connection of French Bay to the Saugeen Shores system.
Kahgee says in the future they hope to move to an independent water system.
