Saugeen Shores Council agreed to a recommendation by the Cenotaph Committee Monday night for the purchase of four video cameras to be installed within the vicinity of the Cenotaph Park at a cost of 43 hundred dollars plus taxes.
The recommendation came as a result of recent reports of vandalism happening at the park.
Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett says it is not a dollar-for-dollar trade off where what you pay is hopefully what you will save.
He says it is more of a protection of a park that many people feel is sacred in the community.
Rivett says police will only review the video if a criminal act has been reported to them.
He says the equipment will be kept in a secured building nearby and will be password protected so only a few officers will be able to access it.
Councillor Luke Charbonneau was one who doesn’t like the idea of around-the-clock video surveillance of a public area saying it will not deter any criminal activity at the park.
Rivett says he hopes to alleviate some of Charbonneau’s concerns by putting in some safeguards.
He says that includes no random viewing of video and recordings to be held for a maximum of 7 days.
The money for the video cameras was already budgeted for 2008.
