Making housing affordable in Bruce County is the topic of a forum being held in Kincardine June 3rd.
Business Consultant/Manager for Saugeen Shores Business Enterprise Centre Jill Roote says the forum will question why there is not more housing available in lower price ranges, and how to make that happen.
It is being held in partnership, Bruce County, the Municipality of Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Roote says the forum should not be confused with government subsized housing – this surrounds how to make buying a house affordable in the county, without that type of assistance.
She says in 2006, the average house in Saugeen Shores sold for 231 thousand dollars.
That number jumped to 268 thousand in 2007.
Roote says 25 per cent of the population in Saugeen Shores, cannot afford that, making under 29 thousand dollars.
She says the forum will identify gaps, explore opportunities and generate ideas to develop affordable housing solutions.
Roote is encouraging people from the general public to attend, as well as investors, mortgage lenders, real estate agents, builders and others tied in with the housing market.
Registration should be done by May 27th through Pat Shewfelt at the County of Bruce.
Roote hopes people will discuss problems and frustrations they are facing regarding costs of their own, and being able to make housing affordable.
The keynote speaker will be CMHCs Housing Award Winner, John DAngelo.
He will share his sponsorship program and LED energy efficient design.
Registration begins at 8:30, the event runs 9 until 1 at the Best Western Governors Inn in Kincardine.
