If Owen Sound wants to declare the oldest sections of St. Mary’s High school as a Heritage property it will be doing it on it’s own.
Education Director with the Bruce Grey Catholic board, Bruce MacPherson says they have no plans to use the facility, once a new addition is built.
Owen Sound council is looking at trying to save the original 1891 school building, but MacPherson says it will not be used by students and in fact will be walled off from the rest of the school.
The Education director says the Ministry of Education has declared that old part of the school too prohibitive to repair.
MacPherson says he has no idea what the city would use the old part of the high school for, if it is saved from the wrecking ball.
Meanwhile, MacPherson says the board is moving as quickly as possible on getting a building permit for a 10 classroom addition to the high school.
He says the board has received 3.7 million dollars for the work from Queens Park and the longer the project is put off, the more the construction will cost.
MacPherson says the new addition will add 2 science rooms along with a Culinary Arts and Nutrition program.
The Bruce Grey Catholic school board is looking to partner with Georgian College to add a duel-credit in the area of Culinary Arts, once the addition is built.
