Disability Support workers in Owen Sound got away from their desks during the lunch hour yesterday.
Ontario Disability Support Program employees across the province took part in a lunch-hour protest walk.
Spokesperson for the Owen Sound office, Sylvia Mannonen says Income Support Specialists are responsible for an average of over 500 cases each.
The national average of cases per worker is 250.
Mannonen says the heavy workload is impacting the health of their workers and in turn, their clients are suffering.
Mannonen says there have been problems at offices across Ontario, with employees taking stress leaves because they can’t cope with the workload.
However, she says Owen Sound has been lucky enough to escape those problems so far.
Mannonen hopes the demonstration will send a strong message to the Ontario government that they need to provide the funding to hire more workers.
Seven of the 22 office workers took part in the walk at noon, but Mannonen says as break times vary, she expects more workers to walk throughout the day.
