The Owen Sound Family Physician Recruitment Committee will now come under the umbrella of the city.
The small committee will now become a committee of council.
Councillor Arlene Wright, who sits on the committee, says this will be of great benefit, adding the city needs to take more of a leadership role with physician recruitment.
She says the city will be able to lobby for funding from the province on behalf of the committee.
Wright says efforts to attract new family doctors from other areas is challenging and difficult.
She says having a dedicated staff person to target existing family doctors in other communities could be one approach for the city.
Wright says the committee has worked very hard over the last couple of years.
She says they have been successful in recruiting three new family doctors to the city.
Two of the doctors will come to the city in 2010, with the third to arrive in 2011.
The current strategy for attracting family doctors to Owen Sound has centered on financial support to medical students and residency physicians.
