The Saugeen Shores Police Department will not be replacing the position of “Titan” the Police Dog, anytime soon.
Chief Dan Rivett says Titan broke a bone in his upper right leg, after stopping short while chasing his favourite dog toy late last month.
Rivett says they will now wait for Titan to recover from Monday’s surgery, and won’t assume his career is over.
Rivett says surgery took place at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph and went well.
He says the cost of the surgery is in the area of three to five thousand dollars, not including physiotherapy to come later, and comes out of the police budget.
Rivett says cost was a factor when they had to decide whether to proceed with surgery or not.
He says in the end, Titan is a co-worker they have financially invested in, and they chose to have the surgery to protect their investment.
Rivett says it is too early to say whether or not Titan will make a full recovery, putting his career on hold.
Rivett says they are hoping he will return to action though, down the road.
Two plates were inserted into Titans leg at OVC Monday.
He is now recuperating with his handler, Constable Andy Stewart.
Physiotherapy will take place as part of his recovery in the coming weeks.
