Work will be done to remove the mould at the Port Elgin Plex.
Saugeen Shores Council agreed to a recommendation by the Town’s Director of Engineering Dave Burnside Monday night to accept the tender from The Durrer Group Incorporated for just over 98 thousand dollars to do the clean up.
Burnside says work will commence once the company is notified of the acceptance and the money to cover the cost of the remediation will come out of reserves.
Burnside says mould occurs during the time of the year when they put in the ice when the temperature inside the arena is colder than the temperature outside the building.
He says that causes condensation to form on the steel structure and mould to form.
He says staff will be watching humidity levels inside the arena when they put in the ice for the upcoming hockey season.
Burnside says the heating and cooling system that is installed at the Plex isn’t capable of taking all the moisture out of the air the way a humidifier does.
He says there is nothing wrong with the heat pumps or the unit.
Burnside says he will check to see if the structure was originally designed to operate all year round or for just from fall to spring.
