Hundreds of West Hill Secondary students will be outside the classroom this mroning.
The Owen Sound high school will help the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority to clean up the West Rocks Conservation Area.
It’s the sixth year for “Operation Green Sweep.”
Lands Management Coordinator Chris Hachey says about six years ago, both the Authority and the high school received letters from residents who were complaining about the amount of garbage along that part of the Bruce Trail.
Hachey says it’s an important part of the Niagara Escarpment, and the community has rallied to preserve the piece of land.
He says they get about 600 students helping them out each year.
Hachey says in their first three years, there’s been a huge improvement in the amount of litter in the area.
He says the effort has become so great, that they’ve been able to expand over the past few years, and clean up much of the city’s west side.
Hachey says it would be great to get the other two high schools in the city on board, to organize a clean up of Owen Sound’s east side.
Community sponsors will supply gloves, safety supplies, water and lunch for all the volunteers.
The clean up effort runs from 9:30 until 11:30 this morning.
