Rainbow Trout season is now open for fishing enthusiasts.
Tributaries of Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario in Fisheries Management Zones 16 and 17 are now open.
Zone 16 is basically Southwestern Ontario — it runs from Tobermory right down to Windsor, to Niagara Falls and over to Barrie and Orillia.
Grey County area biologist for the Ministry of Natural Resources, Andy McKee says a new catch limit will be enforced.
It is two fish for holders of a Sport Fishing Licence and 1 fish for holders of a Conservation Fishing Licence.
McKee says a Conservation Licence is mainly for anglers who want to release the majority of fish caught.
McKee says a limit of one or two fish need to be enforced to ensure sustainability of our resources and maintain the population of the rainbow trout.
He says anglers need to respect the limit so a certain percentage of rainbow trout can live to reproduce and continue on the population.
The rainbow trout is one of Ontario’s most popular sport fish.
It can grow to be 30 or 60 centimetres long and weigh up to 20 pounds.
McKee says it is so popular because of its strength and fighting ability.
