Patients at the Owen Sound hospital are reeling from the news of possible cancer misdiagnoses.
Grey Bruce Health Services officials say a routine quality assurance test in February identified an error by one of the hospitals pathologists, Dr. Barry Sawka.
An internal review of 600 of Sawka’s most recent cases found an error rate of six per cent.
The normal error rate for pathologists is about one per cent.
Durham resident Anne Cluchey says its unfortunate this has happened.
She says it would be worrisome for the patients who have been tested.
Cluchey says if she was in their shoes, she would want the hospital to check into her tests.
Owen Sound resident Shannon Paul says physicians should be more diligent with their work.
She feels some doctors are more interested in the money then in their patients.
Paul says many family doctors and specialists rush their patients in and out and don’t take the time to carefully go other their files.
Paul says her own son was misdiagnosed by an ears, nose, and throat specialist.
A number of other people Bayshore Broadcasting News spoke to, do not have a concern with the hospital or with the professionalism of its staff.
Ken Cluchey says its too bad that this has happened, but feels the hospital will get to the bottom of it.
Owen Sound Hospital Officials are letting patients know if they are affected by the misdiagnoses.
CEO Pat Campbell says the hospital is offering its apologies to patients and families who have been affected by the errors.
