Organic is moving from niche to mainstream.
More and more consumers in Grey Bruce and Simcoe Counties purchasing OrganicĀ fruits, vegitables and meat products.
The President of the Ecological Farming Association of Ontario, Ann Slater tells Bayshore Broadcasting news that there are several reasons more people are going Organic.
She says concerns about food safety and pesticide residue in food products one reason along with concerns about the environment.
Slater says however because of the increased demand for Organic products producers are hard pressed to meet the consumers needs.
She says the good news for Organic farmers is they are getting a premium price for their products because the consumer knows the food is safer and healthier and are willing to pay a higher price to support the farmers.
Slater says one trend she is concerned about is the move by such retail giants like Wal Mart into the Organic market.
She fears by trying to keep their prices low, Wal Mart will put the squeeze on Organic Farmers trying to get them to sell their products for less.
However, Slater says the good side is that more people will be exposed to Organic food this way and than will begin going to local farmers markets looking for more locally produced and grown organic food.
