The future of St. Marys high school in Owen Sound is still up in the air.
Only 7 people attended the public meeting on the proposed zoning amendment for the school.
The zoning amendment would allow for an expansion to the school, but its also anticipated that the oldest section of the school would be demolished.
The Bruce Grey Catholic School Board is planning to use a residential property next to the school to construct 10 additional classrooms.
Superintendent of Business Cathy Colton says there is very little option other than to proceed with the addition and the demolition.
She says the oldest part of the school is prohibitive to repair and needs to be replaced.
Director of Education, Bruce MacPherson says they are looking to do what’s best for the students, adding the school board is very passionate about preserving the culture of catholic education.
Councillor Jim McManaman says the school is a public building, adding the residents need to come forward and voice their concerns and opinions.
McManaman says many times after the fact, residents have come forward with their concerns on the fate of historic buildings.
He hopes this does not happen this time around.
McManaman says residents need to voice their concerns now before its too late.
