An innovation award for Grey Bruce Health Services. The local health care corporation won an award for improving efficiency at the “Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo” in Toronto yesterday. The organization won for its “Roaming Scope” program. Vice President of Strategic Planning Maureen Solecki says they move scopes to their rural hospitals to allow for more colonoscopy and gastroscopy procedures. Solecki explains when they know a surgeon will be at one of their rural hospitals — they send more scopes on that day to allow for more procedures. Solecki notes all they had to do was increase their scope inventory. As a result — Solecki says they have increased the amount of colonoscopies and gastrocopies performed by 53 per cent over last year. Solecki notes the patients also win because they can have the procedure done closer to home. Solecki says the award is a tremendous honour and they expect some hospitals will be calling them to learn more about the scope program. Grey Bruce Health Services also receives 20 thousand dollars with the award.
