The Grey Bruce Health Unit Board of Health is appalled by a recent article in the Sun Times.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn says Wednesday’s paper was full of falsehoods and inaccuracies about the new health unit building.
The board of health’s letter of response to the Sun Times states “we didn’t expect such a vitriolic diatribe.”
Dr. Lynn says article used inaccurate costs for the building’s copper cladding, which is made of 100 percent recycled material and was the cheapest siding material available.
She adds the new building will not be a burden on the taxpayers, adding people need to know the truth.
Dr. Lynn says the building construction is on budget and ahead of schedule.
The new health unit building at the harbour is expected to cost about 17 million dollars — which is expected to be complete this summer.
The response letter also states that the coverage of the new building was one-sided and it appears the newspaper began its research with a preconceived point of view and provided readers with only the information that supported that opinion.
Board member Gary Levine says all of the facts were provided to the reporter, but were ignored so a slated, mean-spirited article could be written.
Owen Sound councillor and board member Arlene Wright says it was not a news story, but an opinion piece on the front page of the paper.
She says its unfortunate that the paper would resort to sleaze on the front page.
The health board’s letter of response has been sent Sun Times and will also be forwarded to other interested parties including the Ministry of Health.
