Spring is here, and it’s the time for the OPP’s annual seatbelt blitz. Police across the province will be checking not only if you’re buckled up, but if you have enough seatbelts for the number of passengers in the car. Constable Dave Meyer with the Bruce Peninsula OPP says this year’s theme is “One Seatbelt, One Person.” Meyer notes it is the law to only carry as many people in the car as there are seatbelts. He says there is sometimes confusion, because before, vehicles could carry an extra passenger if all the seatbelts were already in use. Meyer says too many accidents become more serious than they should be when cars are overloaded. He says it’s a small portion of drivers who don’t buckle up, but more fatal collisions happen with people who aren’t wearing a seatbelt. The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is 110 dollars and two demerit points.
