The Town’s Director of Public Works Bill Jones made a presentation to Saugeen Shores Council last night outlining what will be in the proposed Waste Management by-law. The by-law will include the set fee of a dollar-fifty per bag and increase tipping fees at the Southampton Landfill. It also covers set fines for improper disposal including roadside dumping and other definitions. Jones expects to generate around 258 thousand dollars through bag tags and 109 thousand from tipping fees this year. Jones says the goal is to generate enough revenue from the two fees to make the Town’s Waste Management program self-sufficient. Jones says the increase in fees will also divert waste and extend the life of the landfill. He says there will also be an effort to educate residents of the new by-law through a campaign called “Pay As You Throw.” Jones feels if everyone follows the suggestions they can reduce the amount of garbage they put out and therefore recieve the benefits of paying less for the service. Council will vote on the by-law at the next council meeting and if passed will take effect on June 1st.
