The Town of Saugeen Shores says Port Elgin’s North Shore Park is closed this week.
The Town says crews are on site removing hazardous tree debris from last September’s storm.
The park is closed from April 25th to the 29th.
Back on September 7th, 2021, the Port Elgin area had been under a tornado warning along with other parts of Grey and Bruce.
Numerous trees were knocked down in strong winds, buildings were damaged, roofing was blown off of some buildings including the local rec centre and the walls of another nearby building that was under construction were blown down.
The storm damage was determined by the Northern Tornadoes project to have been caused by a bow echo in the line of storms over Lake Huron which produced downbursts as it came ashore at Port Elgin and at Southampton around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The organization says the damage from the downbursts was rated at EF1 and EF0.
In North Shore Park, some docks were damaged in the marina, and many of the cedar trees that make up the wooded area of the waterfront park were knocked down.
The park has been closed at different intervals since then for cleanup work. The damage to trees along that part of the shoreline was extensive, noticeably altering the look of the park.
Since September, trees felled by the wind have been cut back and cut into sections for eventual removal.
