Kincardine council has entered into a site plan agreement for a new industrial sorting and recycling facility.
A report was brought to council recently which recommended entering an agreement with BEC Business & Innovation Centre Inc.
The report says the owners of the property applied for site plan approval for a proposed 41,432 square foot facility to be primarily used by Bruce Power.
Kincardine Director of Infrastructure and Development Adam Weishar says, “from a waste recycling lens, this offers an opportunity to the Bruce Power operation to further reduce the foot print that goes into land fills. They are going to be able to recycle more of their daily use products in a sense, and divert that from the waste stream.”
The proposed facility will consist of two paved entrances from Farrell Dr. along with 45 parking spaces, as well as two additional barrier free parking stalls.
Weishar says from an environmental footprint standpoint, the Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) team is looking at how they are able to re-purpose, clean and reuse their products instead of throwing them in the trash.
“It is not a catch-all in a sense for the Bruce Power site, my understanding is it is quite an innovative approach and it will be niche components of their operation that would come up here for cleaning and re-purposing,” says Weishar.
Weishar says as they have now entered a site plan agreement, the next step is to have their Manager of Development Services/Chief Building Official provide a permit to the applicant.
“Now what that would do, it would open up the opportunity for them to commence construction of the site. With that, there are a couple of details that we are still working on in parallel with them,” says Weishar.
He adds the plan is to get the shovels in the ground for spring, with the goal to open the doors to the facility within the calendar year.
