The Ontario government led by Doug Ford is introducing temporary hydro rate relief as people bunker down in their homes to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
The province announced Tuesday it is investing more than $160-million to provide “off-peak” rates 24/7 for the next 45 days to all time-of-use hydro customers across Ontario.
“We know more and more families are working from home, and we thank them for doing the right thing and stemming this pandemic,” says Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, the Associate Energy Minister. “We know people when they're home are going to be using more appliances, more energy in their home.”
The temporary “off-peak” rates already took effect as of today, Walker adds.
The Ontario Energy Board is also extending a ban on disconnections until July 31 — for households and small businesses unable to pay their utility bills.
