Friday marked the 24th anniversary of the day a gunman shot and killed 14 women at l’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, just because they were women.
Since 1989, annual vigils have been held to remember these women as well as the others who live with domestic violence, died as a result and survived violence.
A vigil was held at Noon yesterday at Coulter Parkette in downtown Port Elgin.
Pat Sanagan is the spokesperson for the Southport chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women.
Sanagan hopes everyone takes the message home that women won’t stand for the violence against women, anymore.
She says the community needs to stand together to say this can’t happen in the future.
Sanagan admits, despite the message, the problem lingers.
However, continuing education against violence towards women is changing the attitude towards women.
Sanagan says 100-years ago women would have been told not to talk about the violence issue, but that’s changing.
